The Waters of Life Essences are from the flowers of our beautiful water gardens where stones, water, plants and fish all co-exist in harmonious symphony with nature. The first pond was dug in 1995, in a rich overgrown field of Milkweed and Goldenrod, surrounded by stone walls, herb and rose gardens. With endless pleasure, we watched the plants flower, the frogs mysteriously appear, and the bright goldfish flourish and spawn. The tropical water lilies begged us to lean precariously over the edge to smell their sweet perfume.

In 1996, during the construction of the two story addition for WiseWays Herbals, we dug another larger pond to add more Lilies, a Lotus and Japanese Koi fish. The Lotus became the center of attraction, with its large leaves three feet above the water dancing in the wind, holding beads of glistening raindrops and blooming just before the first frost. The magnificent pink flower exuded an intense fragrance which drew a cluster of bumble bees to hover & wait patiently for their turn to nestle into the soft, unfurling petals and fly away high on the sweet nectar.

Inspired by the enjoyment and relaxation the water gardens provided, we completely redesigned the ponds in the cold spring of 1997. We re-dug, by hand, the original ponds deeper, and added another pond with a waterfall, a bog area and a unique waterway between the ponds. A Goshen stone retaining wall was built to sit upon and admire the magical scene or to dangle your feet. The Shubunkin and Butterfly Koi, our new colorful fish, grew and multiplied in leaps and bounds. The fish happily swam over the waterway which gave them an immense sense of freedom. Thanks to all the hard working oxygenating plants, the natural balance within the ponds was easy to achieve and maintain. The water remained crystal clear even without mechanical filtration.

Everyone is drawn to this special place - the cats, dog, dragonflies, hummingbirds, a snake and mating toads, singing way into the night. Fred, the largest frog we have ever seen, has returned every year. He fools many into thinking he is not real with his statuesque manner .

Aquatic plants grow so gracefully within the water. The lilies, with leaves that reach 2 1/2 feet to the surface, send their delightful exquisite flowers up to bloom gently on the water while their roots lie in soil at the bottom. The prolific Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce float dreamily sprouting new babies in every direction almost daily. Their dense purple roots, hanging just below the surface, provide natural spawning material for the fish. Surrounding the water gardens, the plants grow lush - the brilliant purple Siberian Iris, the tall Valerian with its healing, gentle flowers floating in the breeze, and the fragrant mints popping up amongst the stones. The serenity and fertility is clearly visible here in this peaceful, magical, and magnetic setting.
